Idea inspiration
In a recent blog post, Bill Gates wrote:
In addition, advances in AI will enable the creation of a personal agent. Think of it as a digital personal assistant: It will see your latest emails, know about the meetings you attend, read what you read, and read the things you don’t want to bother with. This will both improve your work on the tasks you want to do and free you from the ones you don’t want to do.
With access to all of this information, and the ability to learn from it, it seems pretty lkely that the “personality” of someone’s digital personal assistant could be just as cringey as their browser history, requiring (but not always getting) a timely reset.
Art inspiration
I didn’t do a whole lot of visual research on the abusive AI chan and really just drew from memory, trying to invert the existing design while keeping it recognisable.
But nothing exists in a vacuum, and it’s clear that my memory went to some basic cyberpunk tropes (the glasses especially look like a certain disgruntled muckraking journo). The “A” looks like the anarchy logo, which is kinda cool, and the “I” was supposed to resemble a cross or sword. I like the cog being part of the chains, too.
Challenges
This one was again long at 7 panels. I don’t seem to have ideas shorter than that anymore, and quite a few that are longer, which is always a concern. I suppose this one is longer because it has two punchlines.
There’s a number of awful attempts at clothes folds and drapery in here, but I haven’t been practising or studying those very much so can’t expect much progress there.
For panel 5, I had to search around for references of characters “disappearing”. I also considered doing a fuzzy screen with TV signal noise, but I like the effect I went with which looks more digital (and was pretty easy to draw).
Rewards
I think this is one of the better ones so far! I tend to like the ones that have a clear idea and simple execution.
